The Nigerian Army headquarters has
announced that some soldiers earlier declared missing while fighting
against Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state, north-eastern part of the
country, have been found.
The soldiers went
missing in an ambush laid against them by the insurgents at Guro Gongon
on July 20, 2016, according to the military.
Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman said the soldiers were found after concerted efforts were initiated to search for and rescue them.
“The measures include the use of air assets, special forces and patrols.
“We wish to inform you that the
search party has this morning found five more officers and soldiers that
were declared missing in action, including the unit’s commanding
officer.
“Although they are in a stable condition, they have been moved to our medical facilities for medical care,” a statement from him said.
Usman, in an earlier statement, had said
that while some of the soldiers went missing, about 19 others were
wounded in the ambush.
“Today morning, troops on clearance
patrol at Guro Gongon village and environs to rout out remnants of Boko
Haram terrorists hibernating therein, destroyed the terrorists’
makeshift camps and recovered quite a number of weapons, equipment and
foodstuff in the process.
